APRIL 14 | MAUNDY THURSDAY

In the Roman Catholic Church, Maundy Thursday has a particular significance and is not just another Holy Day of Obligation. It is special precisely because, unlike other holy days, it reminds us of the unique and special nature of the Eucharist. Maundy Thursday is popularly known as the “Mass of the Lord’s Supper” because in it we commemorate the great divine mystery of the Last Supper. It was on this special day that Christ came to His Apostles and commanded them to “do this in memory of me.”

It commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus with the Apostles, during which he washed their feet, a gesture that Catholics believe foreshadows Mass when the priest washes the feet of the faithful. Christians are invited to participate in this act of humility and repentance through such practices as foot washing. In Anglican churches, Maundy Thursday may be known as Holy Thursday or sometimes Sheer Thursday. The day before Good Friday, as part of Holy Week in some countries, is also known as Black Friday.

As the Passover of bread, Maundy Thursday is a time to reflect on the origins of the Christian tradition and to celebrate Christ’s gift of salvation. It’s also a time that community bonds are strengthened through fellowship and service as followers of Christ express their gratitude in tangible ways by giving back to those less fortunate.

Maundy Thursday is observed by Christians all over the world to remember Jesus’s sufferings and obedience, which led to his crucifixion on Good Friday. This night is therefore one of the most important nights for Christians, as it marks the beginning of Holy Week and the ultimate celebration of Easter.
